Males and females look identical but males have a red crown patch, which is usually concealed but raised when the bird is agitated. Also the juveniles are similar in plumage. They fearlessly defend their nests and often perform a "broken-wing" act to draw predators away. They do not make a good target for the photographer as they appear to be very active.
